Hanging a Door

How a door is hung in it's jamb contributes to the overall appearance of the door.  Because our doors are made of solid wood they are generally heavier than lesser quality doors.  It is important that the doors have the proper degree of support to insure a consistent even reveal around the door and to prevent shifting of the door jamb over time.

Following is an outline of recommended hanging procedures for Solid Wood Doors:

EXTERIOR DOORS

  1. Make sure sub floor is level and clear of debris
  2. Measure rough opening to assure net frame of door will fit with necessary shim clearances
  3. Caulk under sill
  4. (Optional)
    1. Place door and frame in opening, backing out hinge screws if necessary
    2. [DO NOT cut off ends of hinge screws]
    3. Square and plumb hinge side and header

 OR

    1. Remove door from frame.
    2. Place frame in rough opening.
    3. Square and plumb hinge side and header

SHIM PLACEMENT

HINGE SIDE:

  1. Place shims behind each hinge location.

  1. Put at least 1 long screw through each hinge dap and shim pack into the stud [being careful not to place screw(s) where they will interfere with the hinge screws]

HEAD:

  1. Shim at two locations on head to maintain even reveal.
  1. Screw through shim pack into stud, locating the screw under weather strip.

STRIKE SIDE:

  1. Strike side shim on side of dead bolt strike plate and latch strike plate.

  1. Run long screw through strike plate dap, shim and into stud.
  1. Place additional shims where needed and run long screw through shim pack into stud.
  1. Locate screw under weather strip as needed to maintain even reveal.

SILL:

  1. Remove sill cap and screw through sill to sub floor.
